Applique the Piece of Cake Way!

I've decided to tackle Applique!

I have this beautiful pattern from Lori Holt from Bee in My Bonnet
that I'm eager to work on. Only problem is that I REALLY don't want to learn on that quilt.

Applique is something that has always intimidated me. So I've decided to draw on all the experts.

  • Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins

  • Pat Sloan

  • Kay Mackenzie

I've started with the DVD Becky Goldsmith & Linda Jenkins Teach You to Applique the Piece O' Cake Way

I've watched this DVD all the way through twice now in the last week. The thing thats great about a DVD is that I can actually see what they are doing as they take you through applique Step-by-Step.

I REALLY needed this visual. I've never really been exposed to applique, except to see the wonderful results. Their style is so calm and relaxed, just watching them I felt the tension and apprehension fade away.

Plus at the end there is a bonus section that includes a Gallery of their quilts. The fun thing about the gallery is that you get a little story about each quilt. Then there was a bit at the end I found fascinating where they just talked about how they met, how they got into business together, how they divide and run the business and more. These little tidbits I find so very, very interesting!

With the help of this DVD I really feel for the first time I can actually DO Applique!

Next I'll tackle Pat Sloan and Kay Mackenzie!

I have all of these 1930's BOM applique squares that I want to make but I don't know how to applique! I look forward to seeing how you achieve this and what resources you use so that I can finally bust into those packages. I am too afraid to start without instruction and mess them up! Thanks for posting this!

I'm afraid of applique too! I just don't know how they make it look so good! Unfortunately many of the blocks I want to make require some applique, so I guess I will check out the DVD you recommend and see how it goes! Thanks for the recommendation!

You will do fine! It is fun learning new things. Don't be afraid! But start small. Maybe a pot holder! LOL!

Which method do they teach? I thought I would start with raw edge.

Great news that you are educating yourself about this technique! I think you will love it. I love that you can take whatever you are working on and stitch away whenever you want without all the fuss of machines etc! I think Becky and LInda's method is really good...Their books are good too and each one re-explains their techniques in print...but YES about being able to see them do what they do on a DVD! That's the best way to learn. Monkey see, monkey do, right? LOL

There's nothing like learning and moving on. Change is everything. Good luck!

My first applique quilt was a Baltimore Album! Actually I took a year long course with Mimi Dietrich. Another good instructor is Jeana Kimball...really enjoyed her workshop.

Dionne, I recommend Pat's Learn to Applique book to EVERYONE who is even considering applique. Her techniques just make basic sense and it is so easy to learn from Pat.
