First of all, I must print a correction. I had erroneously ASSUMED that Diane Gaudynski did her brilliant quilting on a Long-Arm machine.


Kathie at Inspired by Antique Quilts pointed out to me that she (Diane) actually does her fabulous work on a Bernina. This makes her work even more impressive (to me) than it already was.

Also, I find this error rather ironic on two counts. At my Day Job, I never ASSUME anything ~ as a software quality assurance engineer. It's my job to catch the mistakes other people make because THEY'VE made false assumptions!

And I actually provided a link to Diane Gaudynski's website which clearly states that she uses a Bernina. When I went to the website, I got so distracted by all the pretty pictures, I didn't actually read the text. Silly Didi!

Ok, now on to other stuff.

I took a short break from my forray into the world of Applique to finish another lap quilt. It's yet another quilt built from swap blocks. Yes, I am forever swapping!

This swap consisted of 12" Nine patch blocks. I'm not sure what the other participants did with their blocks, but I knew I wan't to do a Disappearing 9-Patch. I like how the black border and binding framed the deep predominantly jewel toned colors.

And because I didn't ~ and still don't (poor me) have a lovely Bernina capable of super cool embroidery, I went over to my LQS (Quiltworks Northwest) and had them make this beautiful label for me. I think it's really fabulous.

I put the label on the back before I did the quilting, and I realize that I didn't even think about placement. Oh well!

9-Patch Blocks

I was participating in a 9-patch block exchange. We all made simple 9-patch blocks for each other and swapped what we made.


I have been planning on taking the blocks and making a disappearing 9-patch with them. That will have to wait until after the holidays, when I'm finished with all my UFO's and holiday sewing. But I thought you might want to see all the blocks I've amassed so far:

On another note. It's been in the mid-50s here, not too cold, but a little wet. But if you go farther up in elevation, to a place called Rachel Lake, the weather turns cold and beautiful!

Wonderful Disappearing 9-Patch Quilts:

I really love the disappearing 9-patch pattern. It's so very simple, and can look so well in a variety of fashions, from the well-planned, controlled colors to the completely scrappy. Below are some very nice examples I have seen recently:

• Snippets of a Quilter The owner of this blog shows a couple of different pattern placements, and some really lovely fabrics. I particularly like how she has demonstrated how different placements change the pattern.
  
• Blocks N Swaps Blog - Clever Sophie made a disappearing 9-patch using pieced blocks! This is a nice option that has beautiful results! Take a look!
  
• Crafty Mammas Blog - Amber gives the disappearing 9-patch a wonderfully refreshing look by adding sashing and some hand embroidery work!
  
• Advanced Embroidery Designs - This site also incorporates embroidery, and has some wonderful close-up shots of the quilting.
  
• Quilts & ATCs - Helen has got a great picture along with the tutorial. Actually, this is a great site full-stop. Take the time to look at all the great stuff Helen has posted, you won't be sorry!

I love this pattern, it's among my many favorites. It's so much fun to see the many ways everyone interprets this pattern, how they accomplish it and what beautiful fabrics they use. The web has been such a great resource for strengthening the Quilting community!
